Not a trek.
A pilgrimage.

The Ausangate is the most revered Apu (mountain deity) in the Peruvian Andes. At 6,384m, it dominates a landscape of glacial lakes, natural hot springs, and some of the most spectacular chromatic mountain formations on earth.

Rainbow Peaks

The Ausangate range includes Vinicunca and the Palcoyo sector — geological wonders of red, gold, turquoise and violet mineral striations visible only at altitude.

Glacial Lakes

More than a dozen turquoise lagoons reflect the glaciers above. Pucacocha, Azulcocha, Otorongo — each one a mirror of the sky at 5,000m.

Quechua Guides

Our lead guides were raised in communities that consider Ausangate sacred. They navigate by instinct, read weather by cloud formation, and speak the mountain's language.

Hot Springs Camp

After a day at altitude, the natural thermal pools at Pacchanta await. One of the great rewards of the Ausangate circuit — soaking with glacier views.

Safety Protocols

Emergency oxygen, satellite communication, certified wilderness first responders, and helicopter evacuation protocols. We have never compromised on safety.

All-Inclusive

Meals, camping equipment rated to -10°C, pack horses for gear, permits, transport from Cusco. You carry only your daypack.

Ausangate Circuit, 5,200m — Dawn
"You stand at 5,200m in the shadow of Ausangate's glaciers and the world rearranges itself. The silence is so complete you can hear your own heartbeat. Nothing can prepare you for this."

The Ausangate is not a popular trek. That's the point. While thousands queue for Machu Picchu, fewer than a hundred people per day traverse this circuit — leaving you alone with the mountain, the wildlife, and the sky.

Wild vicuñas graze at the lake edges. Andean condors spiral the thermals above the passes. The herders you meet have walked these same ridgelines for generations. This is Peru as it existed before tourism — raw, vast, and humbling.

5 Days,

Distance: ~12 km
Day 01

Cusco → Tinki → Upis Hot Spring

04:30
Pick-up from your hotel in Cusco.

Private transport heads south along the Sacred Valley. Your guide briefs you over coca tea as the city wakes. The landscape transitions from valley to high puna grasslands.

08:30
Arrival at Tinki (4,000m) — trailhead.

The Ausangate massif fills the horizon. Horses are loaded with camping gear and food. You carry only your daypack.

09:00
Trek begins along the base of Ausangate.

Gradual ascent through ichu grasslands. Wild vicuñas graze on the slopes. The trail follows a stream fed by glacial melt, flanked by peaks above 5,500m.

13:30
Lunch in the field.

Your cook team prepares a hot meal at a scenic viewpoint. Soup, main course, and fruit — all at altitude.

16:00
Arrival at Upis camp (4,400m).

Tents already pitched. Natural thermal pools reward tired legs. Dine under a sky so full of stars you'll lose count. Tonight: acclimatization at 4,400m.

Day 02

Upis → Arapa Pass (5,100m) → Jampa

06:00
Breakfast at camp. Earliest start of the trek.

An early departure gives you the best light on the glacier and the coolest temperatures for the climb ahead.

08:30
Ascent to Arapa Pass — 5,100m.

The toughest climb of the circuit. Step by step, the glaciers of Ausangate descend on your left. At the top: 360° views of glaciated peaks, emerald lagoons, and an empty horizon.

11:00
Descent through the Arapa valley.

The trail drops into a remote valley with herds of alpacas and llamas. Quechua herders' stone huts dot the landscape — virtually no other trekkers.

13:30
Lunch beside a glacial stream.

Hot soup served at the field kitchen — essential calories after crossing the highest point of the circuit.

16:30
Camp at Jampa (4,800m).

Wild pampas, glaciers overhead, total silence. Tonight you sleep deep in the circuit, surrounded by mountains with no road access for miles.

Day 03

Jampa → Palomani Pass (5,200m) → Pucacocha Lake

06:00
Dawn at 4,800m. Breakfast in silence.

The summit of Ausangate turns copper-gold in the first light. This is the moment that changes people. Your guide photographs nothing — just watches.

08:00
Cross Palomani Pass — 5,200m. Highest point of the trek.

A steady ascent across scree and frozen ground. At the summit: the mineral-striped mountains of Palcoyo and Vinicunca come into full view for the first time. The colours are real.

11:00
Descent into the valley of coloured mountains.

The Red Valley opens up — walls of deep crimson earth, streams running turquoise from mineral runoff. A landscape from another planet.

14:00
Lunch + arrival at Pucacocha Lake (4,900m).

The deepest turquoise water you've ever seen, ringed by glaciated peaks. Flamingos sometimes nest here in season. Camp is set on the lakeside.

17:00
Free afternoon at the lake.

Photograph the reflections. Your guide tells the Quechua stories of the Ausangate deity over hot chocolate as the light fades on the glacier above.

05:30

Because you camped nearby, you reach Rainbow Mountain at sunrise — when the colours are most saturated and the site is still empty. Day tourists don't arrive until 9am.

Red, gold, turquoise, violet — the mineral stripes of 24 million years. The entire ridgeline glows in the first light. This is why you came.

From Rainbow Mountain, the trail continues over the Warmisaya Pass with views back to the entire Vinicunca range before dropping into the Pacchanta valley.

11:30

The sacred hot springs of Pacchanta. After 4 days at altitude, the 40°C thermal pools are a revelation. Camp is set on the meadows below the Ausangate glacier.

14:00
Afternoon free. Final night camp.

Relax, soak, photograph the last glacier views. Tonight: a special last-night dinner with the crew. Stars from horizon to horizon.

"The Ausangate circuit left me speechless. By day 3, crossing Pucacocha Pass at 5,400m, I stopped thinking about my phone, my inbox, my mortgage. There was only the trail, the cold air, and the sheer scale of it. I haven't felt that free since I was a child."

"I've trekked Nepal, Patagonia, and Kilimanjaro. The Ausangate 6-day with Quelccaya glacier is the most extraordinary thing I've done on foot. The Rainbow Mountain section alone is worth flying to Peru for. Our guide Marcos is part sherpa, part poet."

"We were worried about altitude — 5,400m seemed scary. The guides had acclimatization dialled: coca tea, diamox, and they checked our oxygen saturation every morning. We felt genuinely safe the entire time. The hot springs on night 2 were pure magic."

"The Ausangate 3-day was perfect for our limited time. We saw the Rainbow Mountain at sunrise — zero crowds because we camped the night before and got there first. The other trekkers arrived 2 hours later to a completely different experience. Worth every cent."

Arrive in Cusco (3,400m) at least 2–3 nights before your departure. Drink 3+ litres of water daily, avoid alcohol your first day, and take short walks to acclimatize. We carry supplemental oxygen and diamox on all treks. Our guides monitor oxygen saturation every morning. The Ausangate reaches 5,400m — the highest pass of any of our packages — so arriving early is essential, not optional.

May to October is the dry season — clearest skies, coldest nights (-5°C to -15°C at camp). June and July offer the best visibility for the Rainbow Mountain's colours. April and October are excellent: good weather, fewer trekkers, and the landscape lush from the rains. We run the Ausangate year-round. The wet season (December–March) produces vivid green valleys and almost no other trekkers — but trail conditions are muddier and passes can be cold and misty.

3 days: Ideal if you have limited time and moderate fitness. You'll see Rainbow Mountain, Pucacocha Lake, and the hot springs — the highlights of the circuit. 4 days (most popular): Adds more remote valleys, an extra pass, and longer wildlife encounters with vicuñas. 5 days: The full southern circuit — serious trekkers who want to go deep. 6 days: Ausangate + Quelccaya Glacier, the world's largest tropical ice cap. Only for those in excellent condition who want the definitive Andean high-altitude experience. Unsure? Message us and we'll match you to the right package honestly.

All packages include: private transport Cusco–trailhead–Cusco, all meals on trek (breakfast, trail lunch, 3-course dinner), expedition camping equipment (tent, sleeping bag rated -10°C, sleeping mat), pack horses to carry all camping and food gear, certified guide, assistant guide for groups of 5+, camp cook, park entrance fees. Not included: personal travel insurance (mandatory), personal trekking gear (we'll provide a full kit list on booking), tips for the crew, and any personal extras.

The biggest challenge on the Ausangate isn't your fitness — it's altitude. No amount of gym time fully prepares you for 5,000m. That said: for the 3-day, if you can walk 5–6 hours on hilly terrain without distress, you're ready. For the 4 and 5-day: regular hiking with elevation gain is recommended. For the 6-day: you should have prior experience at altitude above 4,000m and be comfortable with consecutive 7–8 hour days. We'll send a full fitness guide on booking.

A 30% deposit confirms your booking. Balance due 30 days before departure. Cancellation 45+ days out: full refund. 30–44 days: 50% refund. Within 30 days: deposit is non-refundable, but we'll work with you to reschedule. We strongly recommend travel insurance with trip cancellation and emergency evacuation cover — we'll connect you with providers familiar with high-altitude adventure travel.
